This is a great article, I'm in the process of building a theory that has relevance so I'll build this thread out with interesting background reading.

Ok, here is the theory. If its right even in part it is a home run in neuro biological terms.

Effectively communication occurs across the sulcus leading to higher levels of comparison and contrast. In effect the current theory of cortical folds might be largely wrong. Pretty revolutionary.

nb: This theory could be debunked if the surface was such that any form of electrical communication could not take place. Although the surface inside the sulcus would have to be exactly the same as the exterior, any change between the 2 would be an interesting proposition.

Possibly the left and right hemisphere is the primary and initial sulcus where the surfaces first sought close proximity.

Then over time as the brain developed more and more were formed. These obviously were less in scale, but still show the ongoing desire to create a binary and localised initial processing of information.

If you buy into the concept that the left and right brain assess different perspectives and combine to create the optimal solution then it’s highly likely that this method is carried out elsewhere in the brain, which points to the sulcus concept eluded to above.

(I am a big believer in scalability and uniformity in design of biological systems - complexity is achieved through iterations).
