Default Atheism, Religion and our existence.

I have a theory on our existence... and by various logical steps I have ended up with the notion that we might in fact be a branch of a greater evolutionary tree that includes non earth based life.

Ha, you might say. Science points to evolution. Yes, it sure does. But remember, science only unpicks logically provable steps. If the initial premise that the universe exists is illogical, then everything downstream of this "creation" only proves "outcomes" and not the cause.

As an analogy we see that desert islands are populated from ocean currents bringing seeds. What if the earth was populated from meteor’s bringing bacteria? Where was the initial source??

If the universe is infinitely old (I believe that this so called big bang is just a localised event) then there is the likelihood there are infinitely old life forms. Wouldn't these life forms shed biological formats simply because they are inefficient and subject to entropy?? Even in technological terms consider that current science believes that it took 2 billion years to go from a 1 cell structure to a 2 cell structure and then a further 1 billion years to go to the multi billion cell structure we currently are. However, there are Sun's that we are aware of that are 10 billion years older than our own! If the dawn of man has taken the last million years then consider how far advanced we might be in a further 10 billion years!!!!

Also, think of notions like how we realise that intervening in ancient tribes (Such as the Amazon) does not bring them happiness and we should leave them to their own destiny... What if Earth as a region was classified as such?

Even our search for life has major problems with it. By implication we are only searching for less evolved life forms simply because more life advanced life forms will likely be so much more advanced, that if we can find them... then they have almost certainly found us already. I think of the SETI program as like being 100 years ago with primitive communications and not even connecting to the "modern" 3G communications... We simply are not on the same wave length. We will only find more advanced life forms if they want us to find them... its like looking for UFO's while they have nano sized technology already here etc.

Anyway, as an atheist... if GOD exists then s/he is almost certainly an Alien... Aliens could however play the role of GOD (from our perspective, if they intervene) and indeed Aliens could believe in GOD... if GOD fills their unknown.

An interesting thought I had the other day was about how we wish to start controlling the minds of other animals for our own purposes. This is currently envisaged as planting microchips into sharks to act as "instruments of war" for the military.

Just what if on the flip side (and assuming advanced lifeforms >10b years old exist)... could they not already be influencing us..

Interesting God, yet again...I think about the universe a lot, I seem to always come back to this:

""The universe seems wondrous to me, with or without God. It has powerful lines and
uncompromising ways. Patience and time sit like sages on the planets, strong and impersonal.
There is a stark beauty to all of this
    ." - Real Live Preacher

Hey, have you come across this?

I am working my way through it, thought you maybe interested:

It’s a nice idea, but I believe it’s fundamentally flawed.

If I take my basic premise that from our most archaic brain we followed signals (and symbols) such as the moon and the changing of the seasons, hence we have always been governed by "higher forces" that have largely determined our fate. It would appear that even as we tend to conquer those forces (or simply understand them) the mind still needs a replacement or where necessary a logical reason (logic is hardwired into us because of the start and finish of almost everything in the natural world around us (birth & death etc).

Hence, the moon, god, the seasons.. All reasons and all logical connections. GOD is a piece in the puzzle which gives us a clear picture in our limited understanding of the world around us (It is no different to the imprinted signals of the moon).

Anyway, I'll write about this under my ANIMAL MIND (tm) title at some stage.

...and a kind of little sidetrack I have wandered down, but interesting as well:

    The Christ Files | thechristfiles.com.au

    Excerpt little overview:

"The Christ Files is a full-scale historical documentary based on the book of the same name by Dr. John Dickson, Director of the Centre for Public Christianity and Honorary Associate of the Department of Ancient History, Macquarie University, Australia.

Filmed in seven countries the documentary reveals the earliest and most important manuscript evidence for Jesus of Nazareth, including the writings of Josephus, Tacitus, the apostle Paul and the controversial Gnostic Gospels.

Neither a work of fanciful scepticism nor of Christian propaganda The Christ Files provides viewers with a front row seat to the facts behind Western civilisation’s most influential story.

Interviews with twelve of the most prominent scholars and historians and access to some of Israel’s most important archaeological sites give this documentary a unique authority.
    "

Heard an interview with Dr John Dickson, quite passionate about his work and research...I missed the documentary (shown on tv), but am considering getting the dvds.

Is a fine list of scholars interviewed.
