Creativity & Academics
What I've noticed is that more depressive types exist in the Arts/Creative area's which I believe are based on a number of factors...
1) Depressive people find it more difficult to maintain concentration and thus perform less academically which narrows their choices to less academic pursuits. I.e. they cluster in the arts
2) Depressive people find artistic expression as therapy for themselves. Arts and Creative industries are more group orientated. Depression is better counteracted with more extroversion rather than introversion "bottling up".
In my opinion people who are in the creative industries aren't as an average any more creative than those of academic orientation, its just that society has a preference for academic success (monetary/Status etc) and so is first option over the arts. An intelligent academic person with artistic abilities will choose on average the professional world in preference to the arts, as it can be pursued as a hobby.
I do however think depressive people who are generally more artistic that have the strength and perseverance to fight their way through the academic filters can offer some incredible insights that less emotional and process orientated academics could never conceive.
